The packed tower has the advantages of large production capacity, high separation efficiency, low pressure drop, small liquid holding capacity, and large operating flexibility. The structure of the packed tower is simpler than that of the plate tower, and the manufacturing and maintenance are also more convenient. The cost of the packed tower is higher than that of the plate tower; The shortcomings of the packing tower are that when the liquid load is small, it cannot effectively wet the surface of the packing, resulting in a decrease in mass transfer efficiency. For packing with a larger specific surface area, the packing layer is prone to blockage and is not suitable for directly processing materials with suspended solids or easily polymerized materials.

Plate tower trays are divided into bubble type trays, jet type trays, overflow type trays, and throughflow type trays. The liquid holding capacity of plate towers is greater than that of packed towers, which makes the operation of the tower stable and not easy to cause rapid product seating. Plate towers are easier to achieve side feed and discharge than packed towers, and plate towers are easier to operate.
